Egypt industry: Govt. targets emission reduction, alternative fuel expansion

The Ministerial Group for Industrial Development convened on Thursday to discuss critical strategies for addressing challenges in the calcium carbonate-dependent building materials sector.

Key proposals include implementing environmental measures to reduce emissions and dust, such as installing new filters and addressing the deficiencies of existing factories. The group also focused on utilising the Wadi El-Saririya area for its raw material resources.

The meeting evaluated the industrial zone plan in New Alamein City and assessed the progress of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM). It reaffirmed the ban on manufacturing soda ash in the New Alamein industrial zone, in accordance with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives.

Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad reported that 11 cement factories used approximately 850,000 tons of alternative fuel last year, fulfilling the 10 percent commitment.

This year, the use of alternative fuel is expected to range between 1.3 and 1.5 million tons, supported by upgraded waste treatment facilities funded by the state budget with 5 million Egyptian pounds.
