Egypt pardons and releases 32 Ethiopian prisoners
Egyptian authorities released 32 Ethiopian prisoners on Monday during the visit of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Cairo, Egyptian and Ethiopian news websites reported.
The released prisoners reportedly left the country on Monday on the prime minister’s plane as he departed to Addis Ababa.
In a press conference with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo on Sunday, Abiy said that the president had pardonned the 32 prisoners.
He also added that they were originally arrested and sentenced for attempts at illegal border crossing.
On Sunday, Ahmed held talks with President Sisi about issues around the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, as well as bilateral cooperation and issues of mutual interest.
