Egypt pledges to lead green hydrogen development in Africa – minister
Egyptian Minister of Electricity, Mahmoud Essmat said on Thursday the country is committed to promoting the green hydrogen economy and sharing its expertise with other African nations.
Speaking at the Global African Hydrogen Summit (GAH2S) taking place in Namibia, Minister Essmat emphasised Egypt’s role in driving sustainable energy development across the continent.
He highlighted Egypt’s progress in adopting renewable energy sources and its plans to produce low-carbon hydrogen. The country aims to contribute 42 per cent of its total energy generation from renewable sources by 2035.
Minister Essmat also pointed the establishment of the National Council for Green Hydrogen, a body dedicated to promoting investment and development in this sector. Egypt’s goal is to become a global leader in low-carbon hydrogen production.
The minister stressed the importance of regional cooperation in advancing green hydrogen initiatives and ensuring a sustainable energy transition for Africa. He invited other African countries to join Egypt in this effort and benefit from the shared knowledge and expertise.
