Egypt signs hydrogen co-operation deal with German state of Bavaria
Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy signed on Thursday a joint declaration of intent (JDI) with the German state of Bavaria to enhance bilateral co-operation in the hydrogen sector.
Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker stated that the agreement focuses on hydrogen trade, production capabilities, and expanding logistics, along with developing technologies and markets.
The partnership aims to foster knowledge exchange and build relationships between hydrogen producers in Egypt and technology providers in Bavaria, as well as potential buyers in Germany. A working group will be established to coordinate efforts and prepare proposals for implementing the agreement.
Shaker highlighted plans for Egypt to capture 5–8 per cent of the global hydrogen market by 2040, supported by new laws incentivising green hydrogen production.
He emphasised the country’s commitment to a national strategy for low-carbon hydrogen production, targeting 42 per cent of total energy generation from renewable sources by 2030, and enhancing Egypt’s position as a regional hub for clean energy.
