Egypt is set to implement an ocean-bottom node (OBN) seismic survey project in the Eastern Mediterranean covering 95,000 square kilometres, Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy announced Tuesday in the Gastech Conference and Exhibition in Milan.
The project, awarded to SLB (formerly known as Schlumberger) after a tender by the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), will be executed in three phases over seven years. The first phase is set to begin in 2026 across 18,000 square kilometres with investments of $117 million.
Badawy explained that the initiative aims to maximise the region’s gas potential, attract more international investment in exploration and production, and provide high-precision data to reduce risks. He added that the project is expected to create more opportunities for exploratory and production drilling, supporting higher domestic output in line with the ministry’s strategic priorities.
