Egypt and the United Kingdom signed on Wednesday a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance co-operation on food security, during a visit by British Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Hamish Falconer.
The MoU focuses on bolstering Egypt’s agricultural sector through a new pilot programme designed to boost local wheat production and promote sustainable farming practices.
Key aspects of the initiative include:
- Technical Expertise Exchange: Sharing knowledge and skills between the two countries to improve agricultural practices.
- Soil Fertility and Productivity: Co-operating on enhancing soil health and increasing agricultural yields, particularly for small-scale farmers.
Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat emphasised the importance of this partnership, highlighting the strong ties between Egypt and the UK and the shared commitment to sustainable development. She underscored food security as a top priority in the face of global climate challenges.
Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa El-Din Farouk said the pilot programme aligns with Egypt’s efforts in sustainable agriculture and wheat production. He emphasised the programme’s vital role in providing resources to small-scale farmers.
Minister Falconer praised Egypt’s leadership in food security and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to deepening co-operation in this crucial sector. The agreement builds on the UK’s recent Global Food Security Summit and marks a new phase in the long-standing partnership between the two nations, he added.
