Egypt unveils national low-carbon hydrogen strategy

The Egyptian government announced on Thursday the launch of its national low-carbon hydrogen strategy as part of its efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy and promote environmental sustainability.

According to a Cabinet statement, the strategy leverages Egypt’s strategic geographic location and abundant natural resources, including solar and wind energy, to support low-carbon hydrogen production.

The strategy aims to enhance international collaboration and attract investment in Research and development (R&D), crucial for revitalising Egypt’s energy sector. It will attract foreign investment, create jobs, and improve local resource efficiency.

Developed with international partners like the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the strategy was presented at COP 27 and includes plans to boost hydrogen production, expand domestic use, and increase exports.

The strategy is projected to significantly benefit Egypt’s economy, potentially increasing the GDP by up to $18 billion by 2040 and creating over 100,000 new jobs. It will also enhance energy security through diversified sources and contribute to reduced CO2 emissions, supporting the transition to a green economy.

Additionally, Egypt has developed an investment website for green hydrogen to encourage private sector investment, highlighting competitive advantages, investment incentives, and key agreements.

The site also details the strategy’s goals, including capturing 5–8 per cent of the global hydrogen market.
