Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty emphasised the necessity of African solidarity to tackle the continent’s key challenges such as peace, climate change, water scarcity, migration, and artificial intelligence, as per a Cabinet statement.
Abdel Atty made these remarks while addressing the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union on Wednesday, 12 February, according to the statement.
He called for a review of the African Union’s sanctions and suspension policies, advocating for a more inclusive approach that considers the unique circumstances of each member state, the statement added.
Abdel Atty highlighted Egypt’s pivotal role in post-conflict reconstruction and development, underscoring the importance of securing funding for peacebuilding and reconstruction to ensure sustainable stability and development across Africa.
The Foreign Minister reiterated Egypt’s commitment to institutional reform within the African Union to enhance its effectiveness in achieving the aspirations of African nations, the statement said.
The minister also addressed regional developments, reaffirming Egypt’s steadfast support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and calling for continued African solidarity on this issue.
He expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and reiterated Egypt’s backing for stability efforts. He also noted tensions in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, underscoring the need for dialogue and respect for state sovereignty.
Abdel Atty praised the efforts of the Sub-Committee on Budgetary, Financial, and Administrative Matters, chaired by Egypt, in supporting peace initiatives across the continent, the statement added.
