Egypt won’t reduce amount of land used to cultivate long-staple cotton

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Tuesday that the percentage of land devoted to growing long-staple cotton will not be reduced.

The prime minister noted that the government would work to increase the areas planted with high productive medium- and short-staple cotton, with their seeds to be imported from countries that are well-known for planting them.

The prime minister made the remarks at a meeting with Agriculture Minister Ezzedine Abu Steit and Minister of Public Enterprise Hisham Tawfiq.

During the meeting, the officials agreed to cultivate an isolated experimental land plot with short-staple cotton, in an effort to meet the needs of the spinning and weaving factories that are currently importing two million quintal of short-stable cotton.

The prime minister said that the global garment industry currently depends on long-staple cotton, therefore Egypt is working to diversify the agricultural products to cope with the global requirements of this industry and maintain Egypt’s prominence in planting long-staple cotton.
