Egypt’s FM, EU Commissioner discuss migration support and cooperation

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty expressed appreciation for the continued European support for migration-related projects in Egypt.
During his meeting on Wednesday with European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner, on Wednesday, Minister Abdel-Aty emphasised the importance of reinforcing the commitment to the principle of solidarity, as outlined in the Global Compact for Migration, and the principle of burden-sharing and responsibility, as specified in the Global Compact on Refugees. He pointed out the modest level of international support Egypt receives, which does not align with the increasing burdens the country faces, given that it hosts over 10 million refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers.
On another front, Minister Abdel-Aty reiterated that creating legal migration pathways and facilitating the lawful movement of workers remains a core component of Egypt’s migration policy. He highlighted the significance of Egypt’s efforts to support legal migration routes and skill mobility between Egypt and the European Union, aiming to meet mutual interests, especially considering the demand for various skills and professions in the European labour market, which are available within Egypt’s workforce.
The Minister emphasised that Egypt’s collaboration with the EU on legal migration falls within a strategic partnership aimed at addressing both the challenges and opportunities associated with migration. This cooperation is in line with the Egypt-EU Partnership Priorities Agreement for 2021-2027 and the joint declaration establishing a new comprehensive and strategic partnership. He also noted that Egypt adopts a holistic approach to migration, focusing on developmental aspects, skills transfer, and combating illegal migration.
