Egypt’s Shoukry to hold political consultations with Italian FM Milanesi
Italy’s Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi arrived in Egypt on Saturday for political consultations with Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry, an Egyptian foreign ministry’s spokesman told Ahram Online.
Shoukry and Milanesi will hold talks on Sunday noon followed by a press conference in Cairo.
The ministry did not reveal details about the issues to be discussed.
Italian news agency ANSA has reported that Milanesi will be in Cairo for three days, and will meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and other Egyptian officials.
Milanesi will also visit the Grand Egyptian Museum to attend a ceremony to celebrate the return from Italy of a number of Egyptian artefacts.
Egypt and Italy have been seeking to improve relations, which briefly witnessed tensions in 2016, when Italy recalled its ambassador over transparency concerns in the investigation into the murder of Italian student Guilio Regeni in Cairo early that year.
The Italian ambassador returned to Cairo in September 2017 with the aim of “consolidating the political and ethical obligations of the Italian government regarding the search for the truth.”
Last July, Sisi assured Italy’s Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini that Cairo is committed to bringing to justice those responsible for Regeni’s death.
