Egypt’s Sokhna to host new $20m plastic recycling facility

Nile Recycling signed on Monday a $20 million agreement with industrial developer Main Development Company (MDC) to establish a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling project in Egypt’s Sokhna Industrial Zone. The contract signing was witnessed by the Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), Walid Gamal El-Din.

Spanning 12,000 square metres, the project aims to recycle PET bottles into food-grade recycled PET (rPET), creating 500 new jobs. The plant, expected to be operational by mid-2025, will target an annual recycling capacity of 22,000 tons, reducing carbon emissions by 40,000 tons a year.

Recycled plastic from the project will be used for packaging, including plastic bottles and food containers, with an eye on export markets.

Gamal El-Din emphasised the Suez Canal Economic Zone’s strides in advancing a green economy, highlighting investment opportunities in green fuel and supporting industries. The Nile Recycling project aligns with the zone’s sustainability strategy to support recycling and promote green economic initiatives.
