Egypt’s Trade Deficit Rose 10.2% In May 2012

The Egyptian Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) showed that the trade deficit rose by EGP 1.8 billion, registering EGP 19 billion in May 2012, up from EGP 17.2 billion in May 2011, with an increase of 10.2%.

CAPMAS stated in a statement yesterday that the value of exports retreated by 13.3%, registering EGP 15.1 billion in May 2012, down from EGP 17.4 billion in May 2011 due to the retreat in the prices of petroleum products, crude oil, garments, fertilizers, fresh fruits and plastics.

The value of imports also declined by 1.6%, registering EGP 34.1 billion in May 2012, down from EGP 34.6 billion in May 2011 because of the retreat in the prices of organic chemical materials, non-organic chemical materials, wheat and dairy products.
