El-Sisi Yet To Receive Election Application Form Due To Lack Of Papers

The body responsible for overseeing Egypt’s upcoming presidential election announced on Monday that Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s legal delegate had not been able to collect an official candidate application form because of incomplete documents.

In a press release, Presidential Elections Committee spokesman Hamdan Fahmy stated that unlike during past elections, the committee would only grant the presidential application form to potential candidates when they provide the necessary documents.

These include 25,000 official recommendation forms from Egyptian citizens who endorse El-Sisi’s presidential bid, the potential candidate’s financial disclosure, birth certificate, and university graduation certificate.

El-Sisi, former military chief and minister of defence, resigned from his posts last week announcing his presidential bid.

On Sunday, the committee announced that the period in which candidates can register to run would be 31 March to 20 April.

The final and official list of candidates will be announced on 2 May.

The election will be held on 26 and 27 May. Results will be announced officially on 5 June. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, a run-off will be held between the top two candidates on 16 and 17 June, with the final results announced 26 June.

So far, only El-Sisi and former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi have announced their intention to run.

Sabahi came in third in the 2012 election.
