Emirates airline announced on Thursday that it is allocating $200 million to facilitate creating a more sustainable aviation, according to Reuters.
The fund will be devoted to researching the means of reducing the impact of fossil fuels in the sector. Budgeted fund will be distributed over the period of three years.
Tim Clark explained “current pathways available to airlines in terms of emissions reduction” would not be sufficient to achieve net zero emissions.
The Airline’s firm president said it will adopt environment friendly practices as according to IATA, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is estimated to meet only 2 percent of aviation fuel needs by 2025.
An additional challenge is related to its price, costing two to five times more than ordinary fuels. Worthy of note the fact that aviation contributes with around 2.5 percent of global carbon emissions.
The European Union has signed a deal last April setting mandatory targets for European airlines usage of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
