EU: Egypt key partner in developing clean energy future

The European Union (EU) sees Egypt as a key partner in developing a clean energy future, focusing on hydrogen production, export, and domestic decarbonisation efforts, said senior official at the European Commission on Saturday.

“We want Egypt to become both a producer and exporter of hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives to decarbonise Egypt’s economy.” Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director General for Energy at the European Commission, at the Egypt-EU Investment Conference.

Jørgensen highlighted renewable energy and hydrogen as key areas for fostering bilateral co-operation between Egypt and the EU.

She mentioned a recently launched pilot mechanism aimed at bridging the gap between hydrogen demand and supply. This mechanism facilitates engagement between Egyptian projects and European off-takers, promising mutual benefits and accelerating the adoption of sustainable energy.

Jørgensen also highlighted support mechanisms available beyond EU borders. The Global Gateway, European Investment Bank (EIB), and initiatives like H2Global stand ready to back hydrogen projects in Egypt.

“Support to hydrogen projects outside the EU is available via the Global Gateway, the European Investment Bank, and EU countries’ initiatives like H2Global.”
