EU eyes strategic stockpiles of key minerals

The European Union is preparing to stockpile critical minerals to guard against potential supply disruptions caused by growing geopolitical tensions, Reuters reported citing the Financial Times (FT) and a draft document by the European Commission.

The document, seen by the FT and due to be published next week, highlights a “complex and deteriorating risk landscape” marked by conflict, cyber threats, climate change, and environmental degradation. It also warns of increased activity by cybercriminals, hacktivists, and state-backed groups.

According to the report, the draft points to a “limited common understanding” across member states regarding which essential goods are needed for crisis preparedness.

The move comes as part of the EU’s broader Preparedness Union Strategy, launched in March, which calls on member states to bolster stockpiles of vital equipment and urges citizens to maintain at least three days’ worth of emergency supplies.

The European Commission has yet to respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
