EU initiates anti-dumping probe into hot-rolled steel imports from 4 countries, including Egypt
Egypt's Ezz Steel in crosshairs
The European Commission has recently issued a notice of initiation of an anti-dumping investigation into a number of hot-rolled steel products imported from Egypt, India, Japan, and Vietnam, according to the EU’s Official Journal.
The investigation was triggered by a complaint from the European Steel Association (EUROFER), which alleges that these countries are selling steel products at unfairly low prices in the EU market, harming European producers.
In a statement sent to the London Stock Exchange, Ezz Steel, Egypt’s sole exporter of hot-rolled flat steel to the European Union, has confirmed receiving a notice of initiation of an anti-dumping investigation.
Ezz Steel has pledged full cooperation with the EU investigation, providing all necessary data and defending the interests of both the company and the Egyptian steel industry. The company emphasized its commitment to fair trade principles outlined by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
“…, the Company will fully cooperate with the EU investigation authority, provide all the data required, and submit its defences and arguments to protect its and the Egyptian local industry interests.” Ezz Steel statement read.
The investigation is expected to be lengthy due to its complexity and the involvement of multiple countries. The outcome of the investigation could significantly impact Egypt’s steel exports to the EU if anti-dumping duties are imposed.
