EU new car sales rise 0.8% in 2024

EU new car registrations grew by 0.8 per cent in 2024, reaching 10.6 million units, with Spain leading the surge with a 7.1 per cent increase, according to the latest report by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) on Tuesday. However, declines were recorded in France, Germany, and Italy.

December 2024 saw a 5.1 per cent rise in registrations, driven by Spain’s robust 28.8 per cent growth, while Germany and Italy experienced declines of 7.1 per cent and 4.9 per cent, respectively.

Battery-electric cars, the third most popular choice, achieved a 13.6 per cent market share for the year, surpassing diesel at 11.9 per cent. However, December registrations of battery-electric cars fell by 10.2 per cent, primarily due to declines in Germany and France.

Hybrid-electric cars gained traction, with a 33.1 per cent increase in December and a 30.9 per cent market share for the year. Petrol cars maintained their lead at 33.3 per cent but saw December registrations drop by 1.8 per cent. Diesel cars continued to decline, with a 15 per cent drop in December and a market share of 9.8 per cent.

The data highlights a steady shift toward hybrid and electric vehicles, despite fluctuations in individual markets.
