Euro area retail trade volume up in August ’24
The euro area experienced a 0.2 per cent increase in seasonally adjusted retail trade volume in August 2024, compared to July, while the EU recorded a slightly higher growth of 0.3 per cent, according to Eurostat’s initial estimates. Year-on-year, the retail sales index rose by 0.8 per cent in the euro area and by 1.0 per cent in the EU.
Breaking down the figures for August 2024, retail trade for food, drinks, and tobacco increased by 0.2 per cent in the euro area, while non-food products (excluding automotive fuel) saw a growth of 0.3 per cent. Notably, automotive fuel sales in specialised stores surged by 1.1 per cent in the euro area and 1.0 per cent in the EU.
In annual comparisons, the euro area recorded a slight decline of 0.2 per cent for food, drinks, and tobacco, while non-food products rose by 1.4 per cent and automotive fuel in specialised stores increased by 2.5 per cent.
In the EU, the retail trade for food, drinks, and tobacco remained stable, while non-food products grew by 1.7 per cent and automotive fuel increased by 2.0 per cent.
