European stock markets opened higher on Monday with banks among the gainers. The move higher comes despite a weaker session in Asia.
The Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 0.9% to 287.50, with shares of HSBC Holdings PLC up 1.2%, while Banco Santander SA rose nearly 2%. Shares of Siemens AG rose 2.4% after selling its 50% stake in its telecom-equipment joint venture with Nokia Corp. to the Finnish handset maker. Shares of Hennes & Mauritz AB jumped 3% after a broker upgrade.
The German DAX 30 index rose 0.3% to 7,985.67, while the French CAC 40 index rose 0.9% to 3,772.81. The FTSE 100 index rose 0.8% to 6,265.90.
