India reduces coal imports, boosts exports

India’s Ministry of Coal is leading a major initiative to reduce coal imports and promote exports, significantly shifting India’s energy landscape. This strategy aims to enhance domestic production, strengthen energy security, and support the coal sector’s growth.

India’s coal production increased by 11.65 per cent in 2023-24. The 2024-25 target is set at 1,080 million tons, reinforcing India as a major producer. An inter-ministerial committee will coordinate efforts to reduce non-essential imports, despite the need for some high-grade coal imports.

The government is also promoting coal exports to meet global demand, positioning India as a key player in the international market. This initiative aims to generate revenue and create jobs.

According to IIM Ahmedabad, potential coal exports include 15 million tons to neighbouring countries: Nepal (2 MT), Myanmar (3 MT), Bangladesh (8 MT), and others (2 MT). The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project (2×660 MW), a joint venture between NTPC and the Bangladesh Power Development Board, requires 5 million tons of coal annually.

These initiatives are expected to contribute to economic growth, create jobs, and conserve foreign exchange reserves, enhancing India’s energy security and self-reliance.
