Builders of Egypt ’24: Housing Min. highlights construction industry’s global potential
Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, Sherif Sherbiny, highlighted on Sunday the impressive capabilities of Egyptian contracting companies, citing their extensive experience and successful track record in delivering large-scale projects. He emphasised that these companies are now well-equipped to undertake projects in Africa and other regions.
Speaking at the Builders of Egypt Forum 2024, Minister Sherbiny acknowledged the significant challenges Egypt faced during its development efforts between 2014 and 2024. The first challenge was the sheer scale and diversity of projects undertaken, with over 1,700 projects implemented concurrently. The second challenge related to the complexity and nature of these projects.
The minister noted that Egypt’s ambitious development agenda, including the Decent Life Initiative and the construction of new cities, has significantly enhanced the skills and capacity of Egyptian contracting companies. These companies have demonstrated their ability to handle complex projects while gaining valuable experience and acquired the necessary equipment to successfully undertake projects of varying complexity. This has also led to an improvement in their international standing.
The minister also emphasised the growing demand for skilled Egyptian labour in both domestic and international markets. He highlighted the government’s efforts to ensure a sufficient supply of qualified human resources and to protect the rights of Egyptian workers abroad.
With the upcoming 12th edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) next November in Cairo, Minister Sherbiny Egypt has an opportunity to showcase its achievements in urban development and attract international investment. The WUF12 will provide a platform for Egyptian contracting companies to showcase their expertise and explore opportunities for collaboration with foreign partners.
Egypt has witnessed a significant expansion of its urban landscape, with the development of 38 new fourth-generation cities, the minister said. Notable examples include the New Administrative Capital and New Alamein. This rapid urbanisation has created a diverse range of development opportunities across the country, he noted.
Minister Sherbiny also referred to the significant achievements of the Ministry of Housing in the past 10 years. The ministry in co-operation with Egyptian contracting companies had successfully implemented a wide range of housing projects, catering to individuals of all income levels. These projects have included residential, commercial, administrative, and luxury developments, as well as high-rise towers.
Egypt’s urban development efforts have not only supported the growth of contracting companies but have also contributed to the localisation of various industries, the minister noted. The government is actively working to further localise industries and reduce reliance on imports.
Builders of Egypt Forum, the largest event in the construction and building sector, is taking place under the auspices of Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly. It brings together government officials, business leaders, and representatives from Arab and African countries to discuss opportunities for exporting Egyptian construction and building materials. Participants will explore ways to replicate successful Egyptian urban development projects in other regions and enhance Egypt’s real estate export.
The Forum, is organised by Exlnt Communications, an affiliate to United Media Services (UMS), and supported by the African Federation for Construction Contractors’ Association (AFCCA). It aims to promote regional development and economic cooperation, showcasing Egypt’s expertise in construction, infrastructure, and sustainable development. By fostering partnerships and attracting investment, the forum contributes to Egypt’s efforts to improve the lives of its citizens and enhance its international standing.
