New Urban Communities Authority “NUCA”, confirmed that the first phase of the water plant located at the 6th of October city will be finalized by the end of 2013. The plant will be established under a cost of EGP 2.6 billion to provide the citizens with 400 thousands cubic meters of water everyday.
Eng. Adel Hussein, Head of the Department of Public Utilities at the Authority, stated that the plan set in 2008 for developing Sheikh Zayed City included establishing a water plant to provide water to all construction projects specified by studies and researches. He pointed out that the plant will be established in 4 phases to generate 1.7 million cubic meters of water per day after being fully completed.
He further explained that this phase was scheduled to be opened this year but the events that followed the revolution have resulted in delaying this step for one year, in addition to the lack of finance which emerged due to lack of resources at the Authority as a result of the facilities offered to insolvent customers. He added that this phase will include performing civil and electromechanical work in addition to some other works that will be launched in phases.
Although the governorate of Giza obtains 80 thousands cubic meters of water per day from Sheikh Zayed Water Plant, it still suffers from water shortage, he said, attributing the reason to lack of projects that work on developing Giza water plant to cope up with the overpopulation.
