Russia mulls diesel export ban amid price surge

The Russian government is weighing a potential ban on diesel exports due to escalating domestic prices, according to a report by Kommersant on Wednesday.

Russia, a leading global seaborne exporter of diesel, ships around 35 million metric tons annually, of which nearly 75 per cent is transported via pipelines.

The country had previously suspended diesel exports for about two weeks last autumn but later resumed pipeline shipments. Russia is also restricting gasoline exports and plans to reimpose a ban on gasoline exports starting August 1.

While no formal decision has been made regarding the diesel export ban, it remains a possibility if domestic prices continue to surge.
