Russia’s Rosatom begins construction of Egypt’s first nuclear plant

Russia’s state nuclear energy company Rosatom has kicked off on Wednesday the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Egypt, a $25 billion project billed as the largest venture between the two countries in decades.

The plant will be located in El-Dabaa city and the company planned to consist it four reactor units each with a 1,200 megawatt generating capacity, according to the company’s statement.

Rosatom will be responsible for the funding and construction of the plant and supply of Russian uranium to fuel it.

Moreover, the company will build a storage facility for nuclear fuel, the statement added.

The nuclear power plant will provide Egypt a new level of technology, industry and education development.

“The political leadership and the Egyptian-Russian cooperation contributed to implementation of this ambitious Project despite the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic which did not have a negative impact on the Project,” Egyptian Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker, said.

It will be the largest project of the cooperation between the two countries since the Aswan High Dam.
