Sri Lanka will begin issuing new e-passports to its citizens in October, according to Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles.
At a recent meeting, Minister Alles further elaborated that the the ministry would initially issue e-passports without an electronic chip. The government plans to purchase over 750,000 of these passports from a foreign firm in the near future.
In July 2024, the Immigration and Emigration Department announced its intention to introduce a new, efficient, and secure e-passport for Sri Lankans, effective from January 2025.
