Swiss c. bank to launch new banknote series
The Swiss National Bank (SNB) announced on Wednesday plans to develop its tenth banknote series, focusing on the theme of ‘Switzerland and its altitudes’. The new series will showcase the country’s diverse topography, from the lowlands to the mountain peaks.
The SNB aims to maintain the long-term functionality and security of Swiss banknotes, adapting to evolving technological advancements and security standards. The new series will reflect the diversity of life in Switzerland at various altitudes.
To kickstart the design process, the SNB is launching a design competition open to designers working in Switzerland. Twelve designers will be selected to participate in the competition, which is set to begin in February 2025. The public can expect to see draft designs of the new banknotes in autumn 2025.
Despite the increasing popularity of digital payments, cash remains widely used in Switzerland, accounting for one-third of all transactions. The SNB is committed to ensuring that cash continues to play a vital role in the country’s payment landscape.
