Tesla has secured its place in China’s government procurement arena, marking a significant development for the electric vehicle maker in the world’s largest auto market.
Several state-owned enterprises within the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone’s Lingang New Area recently acquired a batch of Tesla Model Y vehicles for corporate use.
This move signifies Lingang’s commitment to fair treatment of both domestic and foreign companies in government procurement activities, according to local authorities.
Last month, the neighboring Jiangsu Province, a major economic powerhouse in China, confirmed Tesla’s Model Y on its official government procurement website for new energy vehicles (NEVs).
This news follows an official report in April highlighting Tesla as the only foreign automaker among six companies to meet the government’s automotive data security compliance criteria.
Tesla’s inclusion in government procurement catalogs highlights China’s fair treatment of domestic and foreign companies, said Sun Yuanxin, an expert at the Collaborative Innovation Center of China Pilot Free Trade Zone.
Vice Commerce Minister Ling Ji emphasised China’s openness to foreign companies participating in government procurement during a roundtable discussion in May.
China is dedicated to promoting high-standard and institutional opening-up, while also ensuring fair competition principles.
