TotalEnergies SE and OMV AG are nearing the launch of advanced facilities to produce synthetic oil from waste plastic, aiming to reduce emissions in chemical production.
TotalEnergies’ plant at Grandpuits, near Paris, marks France’s first industrial-scale chemical recycling facility. The pyrolysis unit, developed by a partner, will process up to 15,000 tons of waste annually at full capacity, with a biofuels plant planned for 2025.
Meanwhile, OMV’s facility at Schwechat refinery near Vienna is expected to process 16,000 tons of waste plastic per year by year-end, with plans to expand capacity to 200,000 tons annually.
This innovative recycling approach converts used plastics into liquid oil for reprocessing, presenting an alternative to traditional mechanical recycling methods.
