Tunisian actress Hend Sabry resigns from UN food mission

Tunisian actress Hend Sabry leaves her position as Goodwill Ambassador for the UN World Food Programme (WFP) after 13 years of joint work because the Israel’s 46-day blockade of Gaza.

In a statement posted on X, Hend asserted that since the beginning of the war on Gaza, she felt helpless with her WFP colleagues by not being able to do their duty for children, and their families in the Strip.

She also said that they could do little in the face of a grinding war machine that had not mercy on civilians besieged by death, the statement that published on Tuesday, said.

Hend continued that she tried to speak up and urge a halt to the war on the people of Gaza, and to use the programme’s power to stop starvation from being a weapon of war.

She expressed her frustration as she hoped that the WFP would speak out strongly, as it does in many emergencies and humanitarian crises, but instead, more than two million civilians in Gaza faced hunger and siege as weapons of war for 46 days.

Hend added that the weapons claimed the lives of more than 14 thousand people, left more than 1.6 million people homeless, destroyed half of the buildings, and bombed hospitals and schools that were supposed to be safe havens.

Despite this, she emphasised that she will continue to play a humanitarian and societal role, albeit in new and different ways.

It is worth noting that Israel has been waging a 46-day war on the Gaza Strip, killing over 14,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children.

Since the beginning of the Israeli war on Gaza on October 7, Hend has been active supporting Palestine through posts on social media. The actress also called on her followers to sign a petition for a ceasefire.
