U.S. grants Kenya $60 mln to boost urban transport

The Unites States’ Millennium Change Corporation (MCC) has signed a $60 million agreement with Kenyan President William Ruto to improve urban connectivity and promote economic growth in Kenya, the U.S embassy in India announced on Tuesday.

This grant is the largest and one of the most ambitious threshold programmes that MCC has ever implemented with a partner country, MCC CEO Alice Albright said during the signing deal.

Albright further added that the Kenya Urban Mobility and Growth Threshold Programme will help the country deal with traffic congestion within the Nairobi Metropolitan area.

The programme includes four projects; the Integrated Transport Planning Project, the First and Last Mile Connections Project, the Detailed Land Use Project, and the Blended Finance for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project.

However, the programmes allow countries to demonstrate their commitment to democratic governance, economic freedom, and investments in their people through targeted policy reforms and capacity building programme, the statement added.
