US mulls investment in Poland’s 1st nuclear plant
The US International Development Finance Corporation (US DFC) is considering an investment of over 4 billion zlotys ($975.7 million) in Poland’s first nuclear power plant, the Polish company involved in the project announced on Wednesday.
The plant, set to be constructed on the Baltic Sea coast, is part of Poland’s strategy to reduce its reliance on coal and transition to cleaner energy sources.
Westinghouse Electric has been selected to build the plant, which is expected to cost around $40 billion and be fully operational by 2040.
Wojciech Rosinski, finance division director at PEJ, the company responsible for the nuclear development, emphasised that the US DFC’s involvement goes beyond just financial support, signalling strong interest from the US administration in the project.
PEJ also noted that the US Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank) has already shown interest in contributing approximately 70 billion zlotys ($17.08 billion) to the initiative, further securing international backing for Poland’s energy transition.
