World Bank to help fund 1,000 mini solar power grids in Nigeria

The World Bank (WB) will support building 1,000 solar-based mini networks in Nigeria along with the country’s government and private sector, according to President Ajay Banga on Saturday.

The average size of mini-grids, which are composed of small-scale electricity-producing units, ranges from a few kilowatts to up to 10 MW, or enough energy to power about 200 homes.

It is worth mentioning that about 568 million people in sub-Saharan Africa still do not have access to electricity, according to WB. Africa is home to around 80 percent of the world’s population without access to electricity.
