South Africa’s retail sales rise 4.1% in June – data

South Africa’s retail trade sales grew by 4.1 per cent year-on-year in June 2024, driven primarily by increased sales in general dealers and retailers of textiles, clothing, footwear, and leather goods, according to government data on Wednesday.

On a month-on-month basis, seasonally adjusted retail trade sales increased by 1.6 per cent in June 2024 compared to May 2024. This followed declines of 0.2 per cent in May and 0.5 per cent in April.

For the second quarter of 2024, retail trade sales grew by 2.0 per cent compared to the same period in 2023. General dealers contributed the most to this growth with a 3.2 per cent increase.

Seasonally adjusted retail trade sales for the second quarter of 2024 were up by 1.5 per cent compared to the first quarter, with retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear, and leather goods (3.2 per cent) and general dealers (1.1 per cent) as the main contributors.
