China’s external debt records $2545.3b by June-end

China’s outstanding external debt reached 18.1399 trillion yuan ($2545.3 billion) in June 2024 excluding Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Taiwan Province of China, as per a statement published by State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE).

Medium-and long-term debt reached 7967.7 billion yuan ($1118.0 billion) accounted for 44 per cent, while short-term debt made up 56 per cent at 10172.2 billion yuan ($1427.3 billion), with 32 per cent being trade-related credit.

General government debt was 3009.1 billion yuan ($422.2 billion), accounting for 17 per cent and the central bank’s outstanding debt totalled 906.1 billion yuan ($127.1 billion), representing five per cent of the total.

Banks debt was 7973.4 billion yuan ($1118.8 billion), up 44 per cent of the total. Other sectors, including inter-company lending under direct investments, had an outstanding debt of 6251.3 billion yuan ($877.2 billion), accounting for 34 per cent.
