EU consumer spending up in Nov. ’23
EU consumer spending increased by 0.5 per cent in 2023, marking a modest rise compared to the 5.7 per cent increase in 2022, which followed the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in 2021.
The largest increases in expenditures were seen in restaurants and accommodation services (4.6 per cent), transport (4.3 per cent), and recreation, sport, and culture (3.0 per cent).
Since 2021, spending in these categories has grown significantly, with restaurants and accommodation services up by 41.3 per cent and recreation, sport, and culture by 23.5 per cent.
Conversely, the biggest declines in 2023 were in furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance (4.9 per cent), followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.7 per cent) and alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and narcotics (2.2 per cent).
