Egypt’s total cultivated area saw a 15 per cent increase to reach 9.8 million feddans in the 2022/2023 agricultural season compared to the previous year, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) reported on Monday.
The CAPMAS annual report on cropped areas and plant production revealed that the total cropped area reached 16.8 million feddans in 2022/2023, up 1.1 per cent from 16.6 million feddans in 2021/2022.
Wheat production fell 5.8 per cent due to a 6.9 per cent decrease in planted area, from 3.4 million feddans to 3.2 million feddans. Production fell from 9.6 million tons to 9.1 million tons in 2022/2023.
Meanwhile, rice cultivation expanded 40.9 per cent to 1.6 million feddans in 2022/2023 from 1.1 million feddans in 2021/2022, resulting in a 44.8 per cent increase in rice production to 6.2 million tons.
