World Bank approves US$146m for Syria’s power grid
The World Bank said on Wednesday it had approved a $146 million grant to Syria aimed at restoring the electricity supply and supporting sector development. The funding, provided through the International Development Association (IDA), will finance the Syria Electricity Emergency Project (SEEP).
The project includes rehabilitating critical transmission lines and transformer substations, reconnecting Syria to regional grids with Jordan and Türkiye, and delivering technical assistance to reform the electricity sector.
Syria’s national grid currently delivers just between two and four hours of electricity per day, crippling essential services such as water, healthcare, and housing. The project targets areas most affected by the conflict and with high concentrations of returnees and displaced populations.
This marks the World Bank’s first project in Syria in nearly four decades. The Public Establishment for Transmission and Distribution of Electricity (PETDE) will implement the project, supported by international engineering and monitoring firms to ensure compliance with World Bank standards.
