Egypt, Armenia sign protocol to expand economic, trade, investment ties

Egypt and Armenia moved to deepen economic cooperation on Tuesday, signing the protocol of the sixth session of the Egyptian-Armenian Joint Committee for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, the Egyptian planning ministry said. The agreement aims to expand collaboration across trade, investment, industry, SMEs, energy, culture, and education.

The protocol outlines measures to increase bilateral trade, leverage competitive advantages, encourage private sector partnerships, promote joint exhibitions, and boost cooperation in SMEs, renewable energy, youth and sports, culture, and higher education.

The session, co-chaired by Egypt’s Minister of Planning Rania Al-Mashat and Armenia’s Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan, reviewed opportunities to strengthen ties in agriculture and food security, advanced technology, artificial intelligence, scientific research, youth and sports, and trade exchange.

Al-Mashat described bilateral relations as having “gained strong momentum following President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to Yerevan in January 2023,” calling it a turning point that opened new avenues for partnership. She added that both sides aim to translate political will into practical projects, with scope to expand cooperation in agriculture, food industries, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, textiles, machinery, light manufacturing, tourism, ICT, digital transformation, and capacity building.

She also highlighted investment opportunities for Armenian companies in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), particularly in industry and logistics, noting that Armenia’s industrial base, skilled workforce, and regional market access offer potential for Egyptian investors.

Papoyan said the Joint Committee provides a central institutional framework to organise and develop economic relations, helping diversify cooperation, strengthen private sector partnerships, and support sustainable trade and investment growth.
