Egypt launches smart transport JV for new cities
The JV to deploy 200-vehicle fleet across expanding urban communities
Egypt signed an agreement on Wednesday to establish a joint venture that will operate smart public transport services across the country’s new urban communities, as the government seeks to improve mobility in its expanding network of newly built cities.
Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly attended the signing ceremony in New Alamein for the establishment of Mwasalat Modon Misr, a new company set to operate urban transport services using digital technologies and smart fleet management systems.
The company will be jointly owned by Modon Misr for Asset and Facility Management—a company owned by the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) and the Future of Egypt Authority for Sustainable Development—and Mwasalat Misr, a private urban transport operator in which the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) holds a stake.
The venture will initially deploy a fleet of 200 vehicles across selected new cities and introduce an integrated transport management system featuring centralised control rooms, digital fleet monitoring technology and a cashless payment platform developed in cooperation with the National Bank of Egypt.
The agreement also includes insurance coverage for vehicles and passengers, as well as training programmes for drivers and operational staff.
Minister of Housing Randa El-Menshawy said the venture forms part of the government’s efforts to improve transport services and support sustainable urban development in Egypt’s new cities.
Bahaa El-Ghannam, executive director of the Future of Egypt Authority for Sustainable Development, said the partnership combines the authority’s implementation capabilities with Mwasalat Misr’s operational expertise to support the rollout of integrated transport services and improve the utilisation of state-owned assets.
The officials said the operating model is designed to expand gradually to additional urban communities as Egypt continues implementing its Vision 2030 strategy for smart cities and sustainable transport infrastructure.
