Egyptian lakes Edko, Manzala and Borolous have witness the re-emergence of invasive green crabs for the first time in fifty years, Al-Ahram daily newspaper reported on Monday.
The green crab (Carcinus maenas) attacks fish, prompting concern from local fishermen.
Egypt’s National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries will investigate why the crabs have returned and the effect they will have on local fisheries.
Green crab – originated in Europe and Northern Africa and dubbed the cockroach of the sea – is considered one of the 100 worst alien invasive species and has been blamed for ruining several soft shell clam fisheries around the world.
