An engineering student at Cairo University was shot dead on Tuesday during on-campus clashes between students and the police, state-owned news agency MENA reported.
The slain student, Islam Mohamed, reportedly died from birdshot wounds to the chest and stomach.
The health ministry, however, announced that only two students were injured in the clashes.
The injured students have been transported to the student hospital.
Clashes erupted between the students and police after alleged pro-Muslim Brotherhood students organised protests to demand the release of detained colleagues.
Student supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi have maintained their stance against Egypt’s interim authorities on university campuses across the country following a severe crackdown by the government on Islamists’ street protests.
The on-campus protests have often turned violent, with hundreds of students rounded up and several killed since the beginning of the academic year last September.
