Egypt’s foreign ministry said the suspension of the British embassy office in Cairo is “just a precautionary measure,” shortly after the embassy said it had closed its doors on Sunday for security reasons.
A spokesman for Egypt’s foreign ministry, Badr Abdel-Ati, said in a statement that any country has the right to take all needed measures to secure its embassy headquarters and staff in Egypt.
In a statement on its website, the British embassy didn’t give any reasons for the closure, but British ambassador to Egypt John Casson said via Twitter that the office had suspended its work for security reasons.
Meanwhile in London, a spokesperson for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) confirmed to Ahram Online that “the decision to close the embassy was taken for security reasons, and until further notice.”
