Cairo State Security Prosecution renewed Monday the detention of journalist and researcher Ismail Alexandrani for another 15 days pending investigations in to allegations that he joined the Muslim Brotherhood and “spread false news.”
Alexandrani was arrested at Hurghada Airport upon his arrival from Germany on 1 December. He was delivering lectures in Europe about the political situation in Egypt, according to his family.
The Muslim Brotherhood, from which Egypt’s ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi hails, is designated a terrorist organisation in Egypt.
International human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, have condemned Alexandrani’s arrest.
The 32-year-old researcher and freelance investigative journalist specialises in Sinai affairs. He is also a volunteer researcher on Sinai affairs at the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights.
