Egypt condemns deadly attack on Libya’s Electoral Commission in Tripoli
Egypt condemned “in strongest terms” an deadly attack on the Libyan Electoral Commission in Tripoli on Wednesday and killed and injured a number of people.
According to Reuters, militants stormed the head offices of Libya’s Electorial Comission, killing at least 11 and setting the building ablaze.
In an official statement, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry stressed its support to the government and people of Libya in combating all acts of violence and terrorism.
The minsitry also expressing deep condolences to the families of victims and wished a speedy recovery for those injured.
The statement affirmed Egypt’s support for Libyan attempts to establish security and stability, defeat terrorism in the country and reach a national political consensus.
“The statement reiterates Egypt’s call for the international community to help combat financing and support to terrorist organizations, and to deny them safe haven, as well as to combat foreign attempts to smuggle weapons to Libya in violation of UN resolutions,” the statement concluded.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes as the country aims to hold elections to end a political stalemate and ongoing conflict between rival governments.
Wednesday’s attack was the first of its kind in Tripoli in several years. Though the security situation across Libya remains volatile, violence in the capital has recently been limited to localised clashes between armed groups.
