Egypt post offices to offer driving offences pay in Nov. – Minister

Egypt’s post offices nationwide will start offering traffic offence payment services next month, communications minister announced on Thursday.

Egypt has 4,000 post offices nationwide offering various services, including payments of school expenses, applications for housing units, and bills, minister Amr Talaat said at a conference organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Cairo.

Egypt is working on a new traffic law, which includes a new electronic system for licencing and ticketing aimed at reducing road accidents in Egypt. The draft law proposes an electronic ticketing system for traffic violations and a penalty-point system that would see repeat offenders lose their licences. At present, minor traffic violations are generally punished through fines only.

The Egyptian telecommunications sector’s digital exports amount to about $2.2bn, pointing out that it also supports the country’s financial inclusion strategy in cooperation with the central bank, Talaat added.

The telecommunications sector currently contributes 5 percent to Egypt’s total GDP, compared to 1.5 percent in the past years, and its responsibility goes beyond economic roles as the sector absorbs a large number of young graduates, the minister said.
