Zamalek will host Ahly in their Egyptian Premier League derby on 8 January at Cairo Stadium for the first time in over three years, the Egyptian Football association (EFA) stated on Monday.
“Security authorities have approved Zamalek’s hosting all of their home games at Cairo Stadium instead of at PetroSport,” read a statement by the association.
The Cairo Derby was last held in the 74,100-seat venue during the Egypt Super Cup final on 14 September 2014, in which Ahly won 5-4 with a penalty shootout.
Most Ahly and Zamalek games have been held away from home turf since the 2012 football tragedy in which over 70 Ahly fans were killed after being attacked by rival Masry supporters following a match in Port Said.
