China’s 5G network has witnessed remarkable growth, with the number of base stations reaching nearly 3.92 million by the end of June, according to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Tuesday.
This represents a substantial increase of 540,000 base stations compared to the previous year, accounting for 33 per cent of the total mobile base stations nationwide.
Correspondingly, the number of 5G mobile subscribers surged by 105 million to hit 927 million by the end of June.
This figure constitutes 52.4 per cent of the total mobile subscribers for China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Broadnet, which collectively boasted nearly 1.78 billion subscribers.
China’s 5G network has expanded rapidly in recent years, with coverage extending to every city and town, as well as over 90 per cent of villages.
Since the issuance of the first batch of commercial 5G licenses five years ago, the technology has been widely adopted across industries such as manufacturing, energy, mining, healthcare, and education.
China has established 300 5G factories and initiated more than 13,000 projects focused on integrating 5G with industrial internet applications.
The ministry reported that 5G commercialisation has contributed approximately 5.6 trillion yuan (about $785 billion) to China’s economy over the past five years.
Looking ahead, China plans to further enhance 5G development and expand network coverage to areas including cultural and tourism sites, healthcare facilities, universities, transportation hubs, and subway systems.
