Constitution Squabbles Intended To Distract From Real Problems: Elbaradei

Founder of the Constitution party Mohamed ElBaradei stated during a press conference held in upper Egypt’s Aswan on Friday that current disagreements over the constitution are designed to divert the attention away from real problems.

“There are 3 million citizens who nothing about the constitution, and another 6 million who are absorbed in finding work and searching for daily bread,” said ElBaradei.

The renowned pro-democracy campaigner added that the goals of the January 25 revolution will not be achieved until a sense of “selflessness” and unity is achieved similar to “the one that toppled the oppressive regime.”

ElBaradei also pointed out that that most Egyptians consider the constitution debate to be farcical, since it has nothing to do with the tangible issues of concern to the country.

The constitution drafting process has been fogged with continuous debates mainly between Islamists and liberal groups.

While Islamist forces are demanding a constitution based on Islamic Sharia law, opponents are denouncing what they see as Islamist domination of the constituent assembly which is drafting the constitution.

Last September, ElBaradei along with Hamdeen Sabbahi’s  Egyptian Popular Current , have called for boycotting the constituent assembly accusing it of not being representative of all Egyptians.
